News: At The Border Fan Q&A!

UPDATE: We’ve received loads of questions for EE, thank you very much! Due to the volume of questions, we’re unable to accept any additional submissions now but perhaps we’ll get the opportunity to do another of these interviews in the future.

At The Border is celebrating its one year anniversary next month and we’re delighted to announce that Everything Everything have very kindly agreed to do an exclusive interview, just for us!  Not only will they answer our questions, but they’ll also answer some of yours too!!  We want to collect as many of your questions as we can and then we’ll put them all to the band.  It’ll be up to the band which questions get answered but we’ll make sure all answered questions are credited and posted here afterwards.

At The Border REEVIEW 2015 (Part 2)

This is the second part of our At The Border fan rEEView of 2015, covering July to December! All photos are either mine or taken from the band’s Twitter unless otherwise credited.

Here’s Part 1 if you haven’t already seen it.

After Glastonbury, the band continued to spend most weekends visiting festivals all over the UK and Europe: these included Spain, Ireland, Scotland, Turkey, Germany, Latvia and Cornwall!

They also returned to Australia in July to play Splendour In The Grass festival and some headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne. Jonathan and Alex also visited the studio of Triple J and performed an acoustic version of Distant Past and a cover of Robyn’s ‘With Every Heartbeat’ live on the radio!

The third single from Get To Heaven was Spring/Sun/Winter/Dread and the fun, sci-fi style video was released on 3 August, featuring a cameo at the start from ‘legendary producer’ Dave Sardine and his trumpet!

Your very own At The Border EE fan site was launched on 10 August!!

The band finished off the summer with a few more festivals both at home and abroad: Reading & Leeds, Festival No. 6 in Wales, Lollapalooza in Berlin, Echo Park in Shanghai!

No instruments required! EE did a short DJ-set tour around the clubs, bars and student freshers events of England in late September/early October:

Following a nomination for Best Album at the Q Awards, in October the band played an exclusive show for fans at the Chelsea FC venue, ‘Under The Bridge’. (Photo: Q Awards Twitter)

The video for the fourth single from Get To Heaven, No Reptiles, was released on 9 October:

EE returned to BBC2’s Later with Jools in Mid October to play 3 songs from Get To Heaven (Distant Past, Regret and Spring/Sun/Winter/Dread)

I think the low point for EE fans (well, certainly for me) was when the band didn’t get nominated for the Mercury Prize. For weeks before the announcement, Get To Heaven was the bookies’ favourite to actually win the prize…I placed a £10 bet on it winning which was the first time I’ve ever bet on anything in my life! Many of us listened to 6 Music for 3 hours when the short list was announced in mid-October and were angry and upset when Get To Heaven wasn’t mentioned. I still don’t understand what the judges were thinking but we don’t need awards to know that Get To Heaven is an astonishingly good album!!

The UK & Ireland Tour kicked off in Dublin to a sold-out and very loud crowd on 3 November. The crowd chanted “Ev-ry-thing Ev-ry-thing” in between songs which I think was a first!

This tour made full use of some fantastic new staging and lighting:

All the shows were sold out or almost sold out and there was lots of singing and dancing in the crowds to both new songs and old:

The UK tour ended with the band’s biggest headline shows to date at the 5,000 capacity Brixton Academy in London and the Manchester Apollo:

No rest for EE as it was on to Europe for a few more dates. Paris, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin, Warsaw, Prague, Vienna, Munich, Brussels. It was lovely to see so many fans getting their first opportunity to see the band playing headline shows. They made a point of meeting fans afterwards at the merch stand and signing their stuff at each show! The band also received some amazing gifts like the banana art from Vienna, featured below!!

A bit of fun in early December: Australian radio station Triple J released a viral ad for their Hottest 100 vote and it featured lots of familiar faces, such as Wolf Alice, Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), Mark Ronson and Yannis (Foals). Around the 2 minute mark, you can also spot Jonathan and Alex as police officers/security guards!! The whole video is HERE and I’ve made a little Vine of the EE guys’ performance:

After a few days at home, it was back on the plane for the final gig of the year in Kiev (Photo credit: @UkrainePhoto). This was the band’s first ever visit to Ukraine.

EE play Kiev, Ukraine

So 2015 has been quite a year for EE – Get To Heaven released to rave reviews and many, many amazing performances! We don’t yet know what 2016 holds, other than a few dates supporting Foals in Europe and the UK, but hope that a lot more fans around the world get the chance to see EE at their best…playing live!

At The Border REEVIEW 2015 (Part 1)

It’s been a busy year for EVERYTHING EVERYTHING and their fans. Here’s our At The Border fan ‘rEEview’ of 2015 – we’ve tried to include all the major EE events but can’t mention every single thing or else we’ll be here until next Christmas! All photos are either mine or taken from the band’s Twitter unless otherwise credited. This is Part 1 and if you click HERE you can go straight to Part 2.

After a quiet 2014 for EE fans, things started getting interesting again in February when the band started posting lyric teasers on social media from their much anticipated ‘album 3’. This was the first teaser, posted on 5 February – we later found out that these were lyrics from Fortune 500!

The first Get To Heaven teaser

Seven more teasers were posted plus an announcement that the first single from ‘album 3’, Distant Past, was going to be released on 17 February! Fans were delighted that they didn’t have long to wait until they could hear some new EE music.

The very next day, we found out the name of the new album, ‘Get To Heaven’ and its release date (which would end up being delayed by a week).

Get To Heaven album announcement

At around 7pm on 17 February, we got heard the new single Distant Past on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show. The band also premièred the video for Distant Past that very same evening. The fan reaction on Twitter was mostly very positive – I think quite a few of us were surprised by the more ‘dance-y’ sound but quickly grew to love the track after a second listen!

That very same evening, the band announced that they would be playing four small-ish shows in April where tracks from the new album would be previewed: Exeter Phoenix, Tunbridge Wells Forum, London Oval Space and Manchester Academy 2.

A very lucky Exeter Phoenix audience were the first in the world to hear tracks from Get To Heaven on 7 April!

Exeter set list

The rest of EE’s fans didn’t have long to wait until they got to hear some new songs as the band did a Radio 1 session the next day where they played To The Blade, Distant Past and No Reptiles.

Radio 1 session

Sold out gigs in Tunbridge Wells, London & Manchester followed. Remarkably, thanks to the Radio 1 session, fans were already singing along to some of the new songs! The gigs also saw the debut of the new red stage uniforms:

Straight after the April gigs, the band announced they were going on their biggest ever UK Tour in November.  The Irish dates were added during the summer.

Everything Everything UK & Ireland Tour updated

Single 2, Regret, was announced on 27 April and the video released on 6 May:

Lots of amazing early reviews of Get To Heaven were appearing online and in print. This only increased anticipation of the release for fans!

Get To Heaven reviews

The first of many festivals in 2015 was Liverpool Sound City on 22 May. The band also returned to their home city festival, Parklife, in early June:

Everything Everything at Parklife

Fans finally got their hands on Get To Heaven when it was released on 22 June (or a couple of days earlier if you were really lucky and lived outside the UK!) The release coincided with a few in-store performances in Manchester, London and Bristol where fans could get their new albums signed. Speaking for myself, it was an emotional experience listening to the studio versions of the tracks after first hearing them live in April. The production by Stuart Price was so vibrant and colourful, it matched the cover art perfectly! The album entered the UK Album Chart at number 7 after peaking at 2 mid-week.

Two incredible and emotional shows at Glastonbury at the end of June were a definite highlight of the year:
